Southern Cross Station

•June 20, 2010 • Leave a Comment

This Station was known as Spencer Street Station until a few years back when they completely rebuilt it putting this amazing roof on.  It really is a great architectural attraction in it’s own right now.

Photography is allowed if hand held, if you want to use a tripod they seem to think that someone will trip over the leg and kill themselves or something so you have to book this in and get a security guard assigned who places witches hats around and fends people away from the extreme health risk posed by your tripod legs. Yes the world has gone mad and common sense is a rare commodity indeed. For further proof check this video out…

Blowhole

•June 9, 2010 • Leave a Comment

‘Blowhole’ is a 15-metre high wind-powered sculpture designed by Duncan Semler and built by Black Art at a cost of $700,000.  As the wind blows through, armature and cups interact with each other to form patterns, colours and shadows.  Like an anemometer on a yacht’s mast, Blowhole’s various parts spin in different directions.  The colourful results are dictated by the whims of the location’s prevailing winds.  In 2008 two of the cups came loose in high winds a matter of concern since it is located in the middle of a children’s playground, it has since been serviced and fixed.

Melbourne from Clem’s Island

•June 8, 2010 • Leave a Comment

The fact that a glorified bridge pylon with a cafe on it has managed to acquire ‘island’ status I must say I find bemusing.  Clem’s Island is a tiny man made block of concrete underneath one of the pylons that form Southbank footbridge the man pedestrian link across the Yarra River between Melbourne main train station, Flinders Street and Southbank Promenade.

Being such a well known landmark this bridge has been photographed innumerable times.  I have not seen another shot with the moon in it however, so I hope this aspect of the composition does give it some uniqueness.

Webb Bridge

•June 7, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Webb Bridge crosses the Yarra River near Melbourne’s CBD in a really exclusive part of town next to a marina full of multi million dollar yachts. The design of the bridge is based on an aboriginal fish trap.

After shooting this scene I passed a ‘car yard’ for luxury cars on the way back to my own vehicle. There were only three cars in the showroom one of them had a ‘B’ with eagle wings sprouting from it, a brand I’d never come across before (later I was informed it was a Bentley). I thought it looked pretty nice for $39,900 and then my brain did a double take wait a minute… that’s not… holy… it’s $399,000!?

The Melbourne Rectangular Stadium

•June 6, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I’ve had my eye on The Melbourne Rectangular Stadium for a while now waiting for construction to be completed so I could get access to take a few pics. It finally opened on 7th May 2010 and I got my first chance to visit it last Wednesday (26/5/10). There are still a few cranes and building equipment about and apparently they’re going to put more lights on it soon but it still looks good. While I was there I had two different security guards come out to see what I was doing and to my great surprise they didn’t give me a hard time and just came out for a chat, wonders will never cease.
